In 2008 we started research into sustainable heating and cooling based on adsorption technology. This research showed that the cooling application is technically difficult because it is an application for foreign markets, but that the heating application is very interesting. In 2009 Johannes Burger, Stefan van Uffelen and Robert Jan Meijer founded Cooll.
The first working system was built in 2011, which does not yet achieve the ultimate desired temperatures and power but demonstrates the principle.
The first wall-mounted model was developed in 2018. This set-up has now heated our office building for two winters. Parallel to this, we worked on the tooling to be able to produce the heat pumps.
Product development of the first product started in 2020 and the team expanded considerably.
Cooll is a spin-off company of the University of Twente (UT), founded in 2009 and located in Enschede. Initiator Johannes Burger has been working at the UT on innovative cooling and heat pump systems since the mid-1990s, including in projects for ESA (European Space Agency). Co-initiator Stefan van Uffelen has a lot of experience in sustainability projects. As such, he was quartermaster and, until 2014, the director of the Dutch Green Building Council, a successful initiative to make the built environment more sustainable. The development team also consists of the following people: Anton Verbeek, Bart Custers, Erwin Hondebrink, Hans Pieter van den Berg, Hans Blankenvoort, Patrick Muller, Ursula Huiskes, Eva van Beurden, Pieter ter Doest, Jan van Buren, Jori Garst, Marco Stempher, Martijn Al, Sebastiaan van Vliet, Hassan Firouzbakht and Wietse Offringa. Cooll works closely with a large network of project partners, technology partners and suppliers, both at home and abroad. The partners contribute to the technology through the valued efforts of people and by making knowledge, technology, network and financing available. On the side, we have several important partners that make our work financially possible.
Cooll’s mission ties in seamlessly with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 7:
SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all
